LKM registration for counsellors: what it means for your practice

If you practise as a counsellor in Malaysia, the Lembaga Kaunselor Malaysia — the Board of Counsellors — is the body that determines who may legally use the title "Kaunselor Berdaftar," Registered Counsellor. Here's what that actually covers, and what it means day to day.

What LKM is

The Lembaga Kaunselor Malaysia (LKM), the Board of Counsellors, was established under the Counsellors Act 1998. Its role, like most professional regulators, is to protect a title rather than to police every detail of how counselling is delivered: only individuals registered with LKM may legally describe themselves as "Kaunselor Berdaftar" — Registered Counsellor.

The scale of the register today

According to Ministry of Health data cited in October 2023, there were 9,562 licensed and registered counsellors under LKM at that point. That's a useful reference for the size of the regulated profession, though the register naturally grows over time — check LKM's own current published figures if you need an up-to-date count rather than relying on a single point-in-time number.

What "protection of title" actually means

Registration with LKM governs who may use the specific protected title, "Kaunselor Berdaftar." If you intend to describe yourself using that title, or to practise in a context where that registration is expected — many employers, referral partners and clients will look for it — registration is what makes that legitimate. What's genuinely worth doing now

Whether you're newly qualified or already practising, a few things are worth keeping in order regardless of exactly where you are in the registration process:

• Keep evidence of your qualifications and training organised and easy to produce, exactly what a registration or renewal process will ask for.
• Check how you currently describe yourself in marketing, letterheads and client-facing documents, so your title matches your actual registration status.
• Confirm your professional indemnity insurance reflects your registered status appropriately.
